What is more Important: Quality of Materials or Workmanship Quality?

The roofing industry is well known for bantering back and forth on which brand name or

material is better. Truth be told, most well-known brands manufacture a range of quality materials and have warranties that back up their product. Warranties can range from being limited with conditions for a few years up to being non-prorated for 50 years and beyond. In most cases, when it comes to known brand names, you get what you pay for.

Quality of workmanship may be the most underrated term used in the roofing industry. The Canadian roofing industry has many quality tradesmen who take great pride in their profession, and consistently provide quality craftsmanship. On the other hand unfortunately, those professional tradesmen are outnumbered by others with no certifications, training or government regulation. Becoming a professional in many Canadian construction trades is as easy as simply saying you are a professional.

To the original question, “What is more important: Quality of Materials or Workmanship Quality?”

This answer is easy, Workmanship.

You could choose the most expensive or high quality roofing materials, but if the workmanship is poor and/or does not meet the manufacturer’s requirements, your material investment may be wasted.

With little to no government regulation in the Canadian roofing contracting industry, how

can the customer take control of their roof installation or renovation on their home or commercial building?

Hire a professional roof consulting/inspection firm.

An experienced and certified consultant can help you choose the correct materials and system for your specific project, specify the required installation procedures, and hold the contractor to the level of workmanship required to meet or exceed material manufacturer’s warranty requirements.
